Challenge Yourself

Challenge Yourself

by Marvin Scholz

Around this time last year, I decided to set a personal goal for myself. I told myself that in the year 2017, I would travel to 12 new countries. The idea was simple really; 12 months, new 12 countries. That was the challenge. On December 9, 2017 I officially completed that challenge by breathing in Norwegian air for the very first time. I loved every second of this journey. Every little delay, every 5AM ride to the airport, every turbulence, every:” hey babe, do you have your passport on you?” There are 195 countries on this planet, not trying to see the majority of those countries seems awfully foolish to me.
In the past 12 months I’ve traveled to 1. Iceland 2. Colombia 3. Ireland 4. Greece 5. Czech Republic 6. Hungary 7. Italy 8. Austria 9. Belgium 10. Portugal. 11. Finland 12. Norway. I couldn’t be happier with the selection of countries. I did what I said I would do. And honestly, it’s one of the greatest feelings ever. I’m ready for 2018. New goals, new destinations.
My girlfriend and I are planning our trip to Bali, Indonesia in March. In the summer we’ll be heading to New Zealand and Australia. Morocco is on our list as well. Followed by Iceland in late fall!   This year we’re heading to more exotic places, further and more secluded than most of our previous trips. With that being said, obviously more planning will be involved, and I’ll keep you guys updated with our itineraries.
It’s going to be a great year. No matter what you do in this life, never stay stagnant, never be mediocre, and never sacrifice your own happiness for someone else. You only have one life. Make sure you make it count.
Everyone should set goals for themselves, for me, those goals were to travel, travel as far as I could go. There are all these countries in my head that I want to visit, some for no reason. Others, I can hear them calling my name. The world is too big to tread upon the same path over and over again. Stop doing the same thing over and over. Stop ending up at the club every weekend. Seeing the same people do nothing with their lives.
Surround yourself with people who want to do better. Who want to see you do better. Whether that is traveling with you and seeing the world, or helping you start a business. No matter what it is that you want to do in life, you gotta love it.
If it doesn’t scare the hell out of you, then it’s not worth doing, not worth fighting for, not worth accomplishing.

Challenge yourself to be better than you were yesterday, last month, last year. That is what life is all about. Be better in school, be better in sports, at work, whatever it is.
There is nothing worse in this life than to settle for mediocracy.  And if you’re not becoming better, you’re either becoming worse, or staying stagnant.
The only way to prevent yourself from being mediocre is to challenge yourself with new goals, new destinations, new accomplishments.
Tell yourself: “this year I’m traveling to the place I said I would 3 years ago”. “This year I am going back to school and finish my degree”. “This year I am leaving my toxic relationship”.
Start the business that you always wanted to but were too afraid to initiate because you doubted yourself.  Ask that co-worker out that you’ve been too afraid to talk to. Take the risk, take chances, challenge yourself.
Start the year of with a bang.
It’s not a New Years resolution. It’s a ‘new you’ resolution. It’s not about making changes, it’s about being the change. Not behaving different, it’s being different.
